The successful application of skills and knowledge across different contexts is a core challenge in workplace learning. In the cognitive and learning sciences, this phenomenon is known as learning transfer.
The Next Level Lab conducted research with global professional services firms and identified four key managerial behaviors essential for facilitating effective learning transfer into new roles. They are: 1) leveraging team members’ past experiences, 2) engaging in joint attention on tasks, 3) sharing examples of work products, and 4) facilitating open and consistent communication.
Based on our research, we developed this structured coaching intervention to guide managers and coaches in applying these behaviors practically when supporting working learners in transferring learning to new roles and tasks. Included are dialogue prompts and reflective activities designed to accelerate team members’ competency development and enhance team performance.
