On February 14th, 2024, the Next Level Lab hosted a presentation by Dr. Mohsen Moghaddam, Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering at Northeastern University.
Human-centered computing holds the potential to foster a symbiotic relationship between humans and technology in industrial workplaces, prioritizing augmentation over substitution with software and machines. How can we bring this vision to life by harnessing AI and extended reality (XR), coupled with new sources of data? In this talk, Dr. Moghaddam provided insights into this challenging question by delving into how intelligent XR systems can effectively help industrial workers learn complex psychomotor and cognitive tasks like inspection and assembly. He discussed whether and how AI-powered XR can accelerate the progression from novice to expert through adaptive interventions tailored to individual needs, skills, and knowledge. He introduced a new intelligent XR framework facilitating this through online activity understanding, error detection and prevention, expertise modeling, and content generation. In closing, he discussed directions for future research on learning technologies in the workplace, at the intersection of AI and XR.
